Identification |

At 5:45, I saw a Barn Swallow with a buff/light-rufous wash to the belly. Upperparts were glossy blue in the sun. Dark breast band visible. Long tail streamers seen. Breast band and giss eliminates Cecropis swallow (so Red-rumped or Rufous-bellied). Tail streamers eliminate Pacific Swallow. |
Habitat/behaviour |
---|
The bird was hunting low over a patch of casuarina/coastal scrub with 3-4 other Barn Swallows, ~10 Aerodramus sp. and 1 Pacific Swift. |
Viewing conditions |
---|
When first seen, the bird was lit by evening sun. Other Barn Swallows in same light showed pure white bellies, so effect of lighting was ruled out. It was going round the stand of trees and visible for 3-10 seconds each pass. It disappeared after 10 minutes when weather turned cloudy with a drizzle. At closest pass, bird was about 2 metres away, almost directly above me. |
Observer's experience |
---|
Not familiar with this particular subspecies in the field. Looked more carefully at Barn Swallows due to recent discussion about Buff-bellied ssp. |
Observer's experience w/similar species |
---|
Familiar with swallows in Singapore and Malaysia and have seen all species many times. |
