Identification |
---|
The full front of the BEO could be seen via binoculars initially, and subsequently pictures that were sufficient for identification were taken. It's vocalizations were also recorded. |
Habitat/behaviour |
---|
Observation: The BEO flew overhead and landed on a raintree right beside a lamppost. It stayed there for about a minute and looked down briefly, then flew further up. Subsequently it flew to a really low sapling and made a crashing noise when it landed, but took off quickly again higher up to raintrees along the road and couldn't be easily seen. About an hour later, others observed it at a noticeable location at another neighbouring raintree where it stayed for around an hour till we left, and it was vocalizing periodically (2 calls every 2-3 min intervals, audio file attached - vocalizations heard once at the start of the file and once at the end) when previously it did not vocalize. |
Viewing conditions |
---|
Night, around 10pm-12am+. Streetlamps were also glaring, making it hard to see the BEO when it stayed close to the streetlamps. |
Observer's experience |
---|
I've previously briefly seen a BEO on one occasion also in NTU. I'm familiar with its morphology from online records. |
Observer's experience w/similar species |
---|
I've previously seen Spotted Wood Owls and Buffy Fish Owls on multiple occasions at different locations. |
