Descriptions
Identification
Large calidris with longish, broad-based and slightly downward-tapering black bill, indistinct supercilium, short legs, grey upperparts, white underparts and blackish mottling on flanks.
Habitat/behaviour
Feeding on the mudflats in loose association with Tibetan Sand Plovers. A group of NParks people doing a shorebird survey walked right past the knot and neither party seemed to notice the other’s presence for quite a while 🙃
Viewing conditions
Cloudy so light was not harsh, bird was on one of the further sandbanks. Found and photographed through a scope.
Observer's experience
I have seen this species multiple times before in Mersing.
Observer's experience w/similar species
Longer bill and more attenuated rear distinguishes from Red Knot.
