| This vote was very close, with 4 votes for "Wild" and 3 votes "Against".
The factors which were considered by committee members are listed below: In favour of wild provenance - Chek Jawa is in close proximity to areas in Johor such as Panti and Gunung Pulai which had sightings in recent years, which could indicate a southward dispersal of the species. - The bird was also unringed and its plumage was in good condition. - There has been also a continued trend of rare visitors making their way across the border to Chek Jawa during a similar period each year (April to May). In favour of the bird more likely being an escapee - This species is scarce in Johor and more common further north in Peninsular Malaysia. - Other introduced bulbul species also turned up at Chek Jawa such as Sooty-headed Bulbul, Red-whiskered and Black-crested Bulbul, which are common in captivity and not usually found at this location. Perhaps these bulbuls were freshly escaped from captivity, and this may cast some doubt on the Stripe-throated Bulbul being of wild provenance. |
