Identification |
---|
I saw a mid-sized yellow songbird (obviouslt smaller than a Black-naped Oriole) with a reasonably long tail moving over the canopy with a bouncing flight while birdwatching from Jelutong Tower - initially thought it must be something more standard but after putting binoculars onto the bird was initially perplexed by its yellow wing patches and greyish back. As I knew this was no longer an expected species in Singapore, I made sure to rifle through the entire Singapore bird list to do my due diligence, but really no other species match this appearance and behaviour. As I have no photo or audio I'm not expecting this record to be approved! But find it hard to imagine a possible confusion species. |
Habitat/behaviour |
---|
Flying low over and then into the canopy of the tall forest in the Central Catchment - any vocalisations were inaudible as the drongos perched close to the tower were having an argument at this time. |
Viewing conditions |
---|
Clear viewing conditions, flying bird was moving away and not seen foraging or perching but was able to be located in the binoculars for a short time. |
Observer's experience |
---|
Limited, as I have not seen the species in the wild, but I am an experienced birdwatcher and ornithologist and have birded fairly extensively in Singapore on my last two visits. |
Observer's experience w/similar species |
---|
There are no similar species to the female minivet that I can imagine - things from the region (if not the habitat itself) with similar colour palettes like Common Iora, Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and Black-naped Oriole still look very different to this species. |
