Background
---
A pair seen at the Botanic Gardens by Ridley (1898) were regarded to be wild birds by Wang and Hails (2007). Chasen (1923) stated "(all) records of Hornbills in Singapore should be regarded with suspicion". Ridley in 1906 mentions captive Rhinoceros Hornbills being kept at the Botanic Gardens as well as other hornbill species. Since Ridley (1898) provides no comments on the provenance of this record and Wells (1999) states "no good evidence of residence (in Singapore)", we conservatively treat this record as an escaped pair of birds.
