Descriptions
Identification
First seen around 9:30am, a few minutes after I reached the site. While scanning through the 60 or so Lesser Sand Plovers, a larger, longer-legged, and distinctly warmer-plumaged bird came into view. It was instantly clear that it was an Oriental Plover even though it was only in view for about 15-20 seconds before disappearing behind some vegetation. Until 11am they were not active and many birds were sitting down, blocked by the vegetation and rocks. Around this time, several of the birds stood up and flew from the area where they were roosting to another area where they were all much more clearly visible. As they were standing up for a while, again I was able to relocate the bird, and it stayed open for a few minutes so I could take some "photos" (if you can call them that!) until the rain came in.
Habitat/behaviour
Roosting on a reclaimed area of sand/rocks together with Lesser Sand Plovers – pretty lethargic most of the time.
Viewing conditions
Birds were 500m-600m away at least, but due to the rather gloomy conditions, heat distortion was not a problem.
Observer's experience
Seen once before at nearby location in Sep/Oct 2021. (Maybe the same returning bird?)
