Pied Harrier Circus melanoleucos
|Date||13 Oct 2022|
|Location||Central Catchment Nature Reserve|
|Date added||13 Oct 2022|
|Small compact raptor, classic harrier shape, overall rufous-chestnut plumage, heavy brown streaking on underparts. Broad barred wings, flat face, noticeable less bulky than marsh harriers.|
|Likely migrating, flew south past the tower.|
|I have not seen this species before.|
|Observer's experience w/similar species|
|Eastern Marsh Harrier (6 Nov 2021, Henderson Waves). This Pied Harrier is noticeably smaller (when I first spotted it without binoculars or camera I thought it was a large accipiter), less bulky and has broader wings. Flatter face also points to Pied over Marsh.|
