Bird was seen on a laterite track bordering Pandan reservoir. Description from Wells (1975) reproduced here: "smaller than a Wood Sandpiper, about the size of a Mongolian Plover but more slender in build; upperparts dark grey flecked with lighter grey, upper breast similar but paler, merging with white below; tail pointed, with black centre and white sides; hint of a pale wing-bar seen in flight. Bill longish, straight and black; legs dark Call a high-pitched 'chu-weet'.". We find that the description are imperfect: leg colour is inconsistent (dark as opposed to drab yellow) but possible due to lighting/mud. However, a Great Knot would be too big for the description, all Calidris stints will be too small, and Broad-billed Sandpiper is smaller than the Lesser Sand Plover. Pectoral Sandpiper will have clear cut breast to belly instead of a "merger". Sharp-tailed is conceivably the closest match and we are accepting this record. |
