Identification |
---|
5.30pm. I observed a Streaked Bulbul well through binoculars while scanning a large flock of Cinereous Bulbuls. The bird briefly perched in the open for a front view about 8m away high in a tree. Unlike other nearby Cinereous, did not have white throat and black moustachial stripe. Breast was distinctly dark grey streaks against white. Belly was whitish. Bill longer than other bulbuls. Cinereous Bulbuls were calling, but a distinct harsh call similar to this recording of Streaked Bulbul: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/203951551 was heard coming from at least 3 distinct birds high in tree. No visual confirmation was made for the source of the calls. The recording is attached. |
Habitat/behaviour |
---|
The bird was associating with a flock of approximately 20 Cinereous Bulbuls, presumably the flock that was observed at Chek Jawa in the past week. The flock was very vocal, calling continuously for 20 minutes, and moving through the canopy. The flock then moved north deeper into the forest and away from the trail. Habitat was secondary forest. |
Viewing conditions |
---|
The birds were high in a tree and obscured most of the time in dense vegetation. Lighting was good when the bird was seen, sunlit. |
Observer's experience |
---|
I have seen Streaked Bulbul well on a few occasions at Panti, Lenggor and Malacca. Not particularly familiar with the calls until after this sighting. |
Observer's experience w/similar species |
---|
Generally familiar with the Singapore and Malay Peninsular lowland bulbul species. |
